R12 - CPSA Reconciliation Committee Event - The Politics of Reconciliation in Canada: an MP’s Experience

Date: Jun 4 | Time: 12:00pm to 01:30pm | Location:

It’s been ten years since the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report and the Calls to Action. Voted by Maclean’s Magazine as MP of the year in 2018 for ‘Best Represents Constituents,’ keynote speaker Georgina Jolibois, former Federal NDP MPP for Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River shares her experiences in the House of Commons. As a Densuline woman from La Loche Saskatchewan, Ms. Jolibois will discuss what it meant to bring the private members bill forward, addressing the 80th call to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and being part of valuable conversations and associated legislations that moved reconciliation forward in Canada, such as the Indigenous Languages Act. Ms. Jolibois reflects on progress made since taking office and, in reflection, now that time has passed since the adoption of legislative pieces meant to address TRC calls to action. This timely keynote highlights considerations when advancing Indigenous legislation when the politics of attention is scarce.

Introduction: Rebecca Major (Yukon University)
