Introduction by/Mot de bienvenue par Kimberley Manning (Concordia University)

When the Trans Tipping Point was declared in 2015, things seemed to be improving for trans communities. With over a thousand anti-trans bills introduced in the United States and multiple anti-trans laws now introduced in Canada, the years since have worked tirelessly to dispel that illusion. In this keynote, Florence Ashley and Samuel Singer will explore the current trans panic and the threat it poses to equality rights for trans and other marginalized communities. Situating the panic as one in a series of historic backlashes in response to rights gains, the presentation will explore how trans panic mirrors and reinvigorates earlier anti-gay panics and is inextricably linked to white supremacist and anti-reproductive rights movements. The presentation will then explore how anti-trans movements are attacking equality rights in Canada. Given the intertwined nature of various forms of oppression, the presenters will emphasize the importance of solidarity and of active allyship.
