Abstract: This roundtable session brings together key student Directors and Team Leads of the Leadership and Democracy Lab, along with the Lab’s Academic Directors, to communicate to fellow political scientists political science learners how this highly successful undergraduate “think tank”, currently located at Western and Trent universities offers students a unique experiential opportunity.
Founded at Western in 2012 as an experiment in experiential learning, the Leadership and Democracy Lab has guided almost a thousand undergraduate and graduate students to adopt key new skills in areas such as risk assessment and leadership delineation, to learn new team building skills, to refine important research skills, and deepen some central communications capacities towards preparing for life after graduation. The Lab has been an unbridled success, and its alumni are employed in most levels of government, in many government relations firms, and in the business sector in many North American cities.
The roundtable session is mainly focused on explaining the structure of the Lab. It specifically reviews the research process that is used to help accelerate student learning, and discusses from both a student and faculty perspective the most successful learning strategies that have been uncovered and employed on both campuses.
In the latter part of the roundtable session, student leaders will briefly explain their team’s research project and approach to help illustrate the Lab’s many concrete, practical advantages as a desirable accessory experience for political science education.
