Abstract: Our roundtable discussion titled “Exploring Contemporary Challenges and Perspectives in Human Rights” will bring together authors contributing to Human Rights: Principles and Practice in Canada and Internationally, an Emond Publishing introductory text on human rights for undergraduate students. Each author will discuss themes emerging from their respective chapters, including the foundations of human rights, critiques of human rights, civil and political rights, the role of non-State actors, and the future of human rights. Our roundtable discussion will: i. introduce foundational principles and diverse perspectives on human rights as explored in the textbook; ii. discuss and critically examine the challenges and critiques of human rights frameworks, including cultural relativism, neoliberalism, and rights inflation; iii. evaluate the evolving influence of non-State actors such as NGOs, corporations, and social movements in human rights advocacy and enforcement; and iv. envision the future direction of human rights research and education, especially in Canada and within the context of international human rights frameworks. Through exploring both academic insights and real-world applications of human rights in practice, this roundtable discussion will foster a deeper understanding of the current state of human rights in Canada and internationally, as well as emerging trends for the future of human rights. The format of our proposal consists of opening remarks, key insights from each author, and a roundtable discussion, followed by a question-and-answer period.
